Edmed Coal is 90 Years Young!

Coal Firm Still Fired Up After 90 years' Service

A family run coal business is celebrating it's 90th birthday this month. For three generations Edmed Coal in Newington has been keeping local residents warm and cosy.

Steve Edmed 37 of Eastling near Faversham has been in charge of the business for 19 years, although his day to day tasks are a world away from the company's early days when his granddad Percy made deliveries round Milton by horse and cart. A former brickmaker, Percy acquired the business in the pub over a gentlemanly handshake in 1917 and it was not long before the Edmed brand had expanded to chimney sweeping.

Percy's son Bill took over in 1946 and in time a 13-year-old Steve was helping out his Dad with deliveries by hauling coal from the Edmed lorry, before joining the company at 18.

He took over in 1988 and has since moved to Newington. A year ago he set up a stove shop where business is still going strong. Steve still makes the coal rounds, although he makes deliveries all over the country and uses a modern vehicle.

On working for his dad, Steve said "A first it was quite difficult, because he was set in his own ways. It was probably the same as when he started out with his dad." He has promised to support his children Scott,three and Holly, six if they decide to follow in the family footsteps.
